Dr Yvonne Daniel BSc PhD

Lead Scientist and Operational Lead Special Haematology

Yvonne Daniel is a chartered and state registered Biomedical Scientist based at Viapath, Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital site, London.

She has worked in laboratories in both New Zealand, where she completed her training and the UK. Yvonne moved to Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital in 1995 to take charge of the Red Cell and Immunophenotyping laboratories.

Her experience encompasses both protein and molecular based diagnostic techniques for red and white cell investigations.

She gained her PhD in 2010 from King's College London which described the development of a highly sensitive and specific method of screening for haemoglobinopathies using mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry. This method is now in use in Wales for newborn screening and is being piloted in England. 

She is involved in training as a regular guest lecturer on a national and international level.

In addition to her diagnostic role she is seconded as a scientific advisor to the NHS Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Screening Programme.

She is also currently involved as scientific advisor to projects implementing haemoglobinopathy screening in Nigeria, where she has led on technical implementation, policy formation for interpretative and reporting algorithms, quality process and training.
