Urine Acid/Alcohol fast bacilli (AFB)

Description: 
Isolation and sensitivity testing of Mycobacteria. Processing of isolates is performed using the Bactec MGIT 960. Isolates are referred to the National Mycobacterium Reference Laboratory for identifcation and sensitivity testing.
Clinical details: 
TB, AFB
Sample type and Volume required: 
3 early morning urines collected on consecutive days. The sample should be collected in a 500 ml sterile container (available from pathology) and placed in a sealed plastic bag.
Turnaround time: 
Culture 6 - 12 weeks
Storage and transport: 
Specimens should be transported and processed as soon as possible. If processing is delayed, refrideration is preferable to storage at ambient temperature.
