Description:
Sample sent to Hospital for Tropical Diseases (PHE National Parasitology Reference Lab) referral laboratory for Strongyloides serology testing.
Clinical details:
Strongyloides is a parasitic round worm (thread worm), with a high prevalence in tropical and sub-tropical climates and individuals can remain infected for decades. Many infections are asymptomatic and only detected on screens to investigate eosinophilia. Initial infection is through the skin with symptoms of dermatitis and itching. If the parasite invades the lungs it causes coughing and pneumonia-like symptoms or in the intestine it can cause ulceration or blockage. A hyper-infection syndrome resembling sepsis can develop particularly in individuals from endemic areas who receive immunosuppresive treatment and screening for strongyloides should be considered prior to such therapy in appropriate cases.
Sample type and Volume required:
500 ul serum or 2.5 – 5ml Yellow Top Serum Separation Tube (SST) Clotted Blood (for serum).
