Schistosomal Serology

This test is referred to another lab outside our network
This does not affect where samples are sent and where your results are issued.
Description:
Sample sent to Hospital for Tropical Diseases (PHE National Parasitology Reference Lab) referral laboratory for Schistosomal serology testing using an ELISA. False negative results can occur as seroconversion may take up to three months after infection. In cases of suspected acute schistosomiasis, discuss the case with an infection specialist, as other investigations such as direct parasite detection may be recommended.
Clinical details:
Human infection occurs after freshwater exposure in an endemic tropical country. Most infections are asymptomatic. Following exposure, the patient may experience an itchy rash, or "katayama fever". Consequences of chronic untreated schistosomiasis can include gastrointestinal, hepatic, urinary tract, and neurological disease.
