Description:
Sample sent to PHE Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL), Porten Down for Hantavirus diagnostics. Specific tests depend on exposure / travel history, disease presentation, and duration of symptoms and PCR may be performed on other sample types. Hantaviruses include the Hantaan, Seoul, Dobrava, Puumala and Sin Nombre groups. The infection is a zoonosis. Rodents are the primary natural reservoir. This assay is available routinely Mon to Fri.
Clinical details:
Hantaviruses are distributed globally and cause two serious infections in humans; 'haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome' (HFRS) and 'hantavirus pulmonary syndrome' (HPS). The first UK cases of Seoul virus infection have recently been reported.

Sample type and Volume required:
2.5 – 5ml Yellow Top Serum Separation Tube (SST) Clotted Blood (for serum) or 4-9ml Purple Top EDTA blood (for whole blood or plasma). Urine to be collected in a sterile universal container with no additives.

Storage and transport:
Place labelled sample in a sealed sample bag and send to Central Specimen Reception (CSR). To prevent sample haemolysis please store samples in refrigerator if a delay in sending samples to CSR is unavoidable.
