Description: 
Sample sent to PHE Porton Down RIPL referral laboratory for Sandfly Fever virus (Phlebovirus) IgG testing.
Clinical details: 
Sandfly fever, (Papataci or 3 day fever) causes a self limiting acute febrile illness of 2 - 4 days and is endemic in the Mediterranean and east to Pakistan and India. It is caused by one of 2 serotypes of Phlebovirus (Naples or Sicilian) and is spread by Phlebotomine sandflies. Most commonly recognised when large groups of non-immune individuals move to an endemic area e.g. the military. It is important to consider other causes of fever in a returning traveler particularly malaria. Please call to discuss any additional testing as required.

Sample type and Volume required: 
500 ul serum or 2.5 – 5ml Yellow Top Serum Separation Tube (SST) Clotted Blood (for serum).

14 days
Storage and transport: 
Place labelled sample in a sealed sample bag and send to Central Specimen Reception (CSR). To prevent sample haemolysis please store samples in refrigerator if a delay in sending samples to CSR is unavoidable.
