Fine needle aspirates (FNA)

Description: 
Microscopy, culture and identification and susceptibility of any organism likely to be pathogenic. Please order AFB culture separately if mycobacterial infection is suspected. Please order cytology (histopathology) separately.

Sample type and Volume required: 
Sterile Universal Container - maximum of 20ml of fluid.
Specimens received in formol-saline are not suitable for culture.
Turnaround time: 
2 - 5 days
Storage and transport: 
Place labelled sample in a sealed sample bag and send to Central Specimen Reception (CSR). Samples should be refrigerated if transport to the laboratory is delayed.
