Description: 
Sample sent to the PHE Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL), Porten Down for Coxiella burnetii serology testing using an indirect immunoflourescence and ELISA techniques. In acute infection, antibodies may not be present, so a convalescent specimen should also be tested. Coxiella can result in chronic infection: if there is a clinical suspicion of chronic infection, please discuss the case with an infection specialist to guide appropriate choice of investigations.
Clinical details: 
Coxiella burnetii is a zoonosis which can result in sub-clinical or symptomatic infection. In acute cases, the presentation may be with an influenza-like illness, pneumonia, or hepatitis. The most common manfestation of chronic Q fever is endocarditis.
Sample type and Volume required: 
2.5 – 5ml Yellow Top Serum Separation Tube (SST) Clotted Blood (for serum).

Storage and transport: 
Place labelled sample in a sealed sample bag and send to Central Specimen Reception (CSR). To prevent sample haemolysis please store samples in refrigerator if a delay in sending samples to CSR is unavoidable.
