Dr Carolyn Hemsley MA BM BCh (OXON) PhD MRCP RCPath

Consultant and Clinical Lead for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases,

Carolyn trained at Oxford University, obtaining her medical degree in 1994.

She started training in infection as a registrar in Oxford and completed her final years as a registrar in London having successfully completed a PhD at Tufts University, Boston in collaboration with Imperial College, London.

Carolyn joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology in 2007 and has been involved with Viapath since its inception in 2008.

She was appointed Clinical Lead for Microbiology and Infection in 2014. Through this role, she aims to strengthen the relationship between the infection sciences group of Viapath analytical services and the NHS clinical services, to enable a patient focused, high quality service provision.

She has a specialist interest in bone and joint infection and infection in the immunocompromised. She also set up, and continues to lead, the Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy Service, which supports patients in the community whilst receiving intravenous antimicrobials.
