A Tissue Typing Laboratory has been based at Guy's Hospital for over 30 years.
It was presaged by the work of Peter Gorer 'the father of histocompatibility antigens'. He was the first person to describe transplantation antigens and formulate an immunological theory of transplantation.
The Department takes part in National and International quality control exercises and, having been fully accredited by the CPA (UK) Ltd since 1997 and the European Federation of Immunogenetics since 2008, has recently gained accreditation by UKAS to ISO 15189:2012 Standards, Laboratory number 9568. It is approved for teaching Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics by the Royal College of Pathologists.
