Laboratory overview:
The Blood Transfusion Laboratory at King's College Hospital is the busiest single site transfusion laboratory in the UK.
Our laboratory provides a comprehensive Red Cell Immunohaematology service as well as meeting the blood transfusion needs of patients at Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust at both Denmark Hill and Orpington sites.
We operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Key features:
We provide a full range of immunohaematological services at Kings College Hospital. As well as supporting Kings as one of four Major Trauma Centres in and around London we offer vital support to one of the largest Bone Marrow Transplant programmes in the country.
We also provide key services to the on-site Liver Transplantation Team, the Fetal Medicine Unit and the antenatal screening programme for the prevention of haemolytic disease of the newborn.
The Blood Transfusion Laboratory provides both standard and highly specialised blood and blood components to meet the diverse requirements of patient’s dependant on these products.
We also have a comprehensive range of clinical policies for blood transfusion incorporating every aspect of the transfusion process and its complications.
Guidance is provided, for example, in surgical blood ordering, blood ordering in complex clinical situations such as bone marrow and solid organ transplantions and advice for patients who may refuse to have blood transfusions.
